Perast is an urban settlement of the municipality Kotor, Montenegro. According to the 2003 census, in this small town in the Bay of Kotor live 349 inhabitants. Perast lies at the foot of the hill of St. Elijah (873 m), opposite the strait Verige in the Bay of Kotor. It was named after an Illyrian tribe Pirusta, prehistoric remains were found in the cave of Špila above Perast, which supports the fact that this area has been inhabited since the earliest times.

At the foot of the hill of St. Elijah, 12 kilometers from Kotor, looking at the Strait of Verige, there is, as the Bokelj people would say, the most beautiful pearl in the stone lace of the Bay of Kotor.
Perast, a small maritime town, flourished during the 17th and 18th centuries. Hundreds of ships from Perast sailed the world's seas at that time.
This place was not bypassed by ancient legend, so it got its name from the Illyrian tribe Pirusti. Queen Teuta from Albania came and settled here. Thus the Illyrians secured the entrance to the Gulf over which Perast has been keeping watch since Neolithic times.
This town, all in stone, is divided into two parts by a large stone ball. The port stretches from Pjaca to Pošov, which includes the area along the coast between two rows of houses. It is a place of old shipyards and noble palaces. Although it only has 350 inhabitants, in this so-called one street, the place raised as many as 19 palaces and 18 churches. The central square is dominated by the Church of St. Nicholas with a 55 metres tall bell tower. The church of St. Anne on the hill above the city, painted by the famous icon painter Tripo Kokolja, is also interesting.
Today, the Museum of the City of Perast is located in the most prominent palace of Bujović. It is rich in testimonies of the turbulent history of the city. Behind that renaissance-baroque building, there is an even more turbulent story. According to the legend, the owner Vicko Bujović was delighted with the appearance of his palace. When the builder stated that he could build an even more beautiful one, Vicko, in a fit of rage, threw him off the roof of the palace.
