Danilovgrad is located below the shady Garač. In winter, it resembles an African mountain peak, so it is also called Montenegrin Kilimanjaro.
This city is a young town from the second half of the 19th century, and it has a significant transit, natural - geomorphological and communication role of both then and present Montenegro. The name Danilovgrad, in honor of Prince Danilo Petrović, was given by Prince Nikola after his uncle and predecessor.
The city, in its new attire, came to life only in 1870, when the Duke Mirko Bridge was ceremoniously opened. However, its existence in the green valley of karst Montenegro dates back to prehistory. Necropolises and architectural ensembles on Taraš, Crkvine and Šipkova Glavica are testimonies of significant cultural achievements from the ancient era. The communication took place on a significant stretch Shkodra - Skadar Lake towards Duklja, through the Zeta valley to the northwest. Precisely because of such dense nodes, in the last decades of the VIII and the beginning of the IX century, the most important center of the medieval Zeta was created - Porphyrogenitus Lontdoclom, as science calls it. It is popularly known as the Martinići hillfort. In the fertile plain of Zeta, the view is governed by another unusual geomorphological and fortification structure - Medieval Town Spuž. Spuž was first mentioned in 1378 in charters.
Centuries ahead, during the rule of Petrović and workman Dragiša Milutinović, it was predicted that Nova Varoš would become the new economic center of Montenegro. Danilovgrad is becoming a sophisticated version of this plan.
