Valley of the Gods - whoever comes once, always returns to the Montenegrin capital
God thought he had brought an end to the creation of the world. And then the angels reminded him that another small but valuable group of people remained.
The eyebrows frowned, a great storm arose, the heavens opened and Montenegro was created. And in the place where He stood, He founded Cetinje and bequeathed that all who are born on that karst be gods. That is how Cetinje became the Valley of the Gods.
It is still considered a Montenegrin historical and cultural stronghold. It is located at the foot of the famed Lovćen, in the karst valley. It is also called a city-museum, because there are examples of historical turmoil, endowments, missions and museums in a small area. It all started with Ivan Crnojević, who moved north from Žabljak Crnojević to Cetinjsko polje, and the rest is history. Namely, it is mentioned as a settlement in the middle of the 15th century, the Vlaška church was built, and Ivan built his palaces next to the Orlov krš and a monastery dedicated to the Birth of the Most Holy Mother of God. The Zeta Metropolitanate was later founded on that place. The place at the foot of the Orlov krš is the main stronghold from where Cetinje, as a town, began to expand. And the rulers of the Petrović dynasty enriched it with architectural and endowment buildings. After the wars and devastation, which were not lacking, everything started to develop urbanistically, thanks to the aspirations of Peter II Petrović Njegoš and his Biljarda. During the reign of King Nikola, a new court was built, the first Danilo I Hospital, the Girls' Institute, the Government House (Vladin dom), European embassies and their delegations. Precisely because of the different urban solutions in a small place, this is stylistically one of the most interesting urban units in Europe.
What to see in Cetinje:
King Nikola's Castle - It is both a museum and a court because of the preserved ambience. It has several tens of thousands of objects sublimated in the archaeological, ethnographic, art collection, there are also decorations, weapons, plaques, seals, coats of arms, flags and photographs. The court library, with 10,000 rare books, also contains two Oktoihs - Prvoglasnik and Petoglasnik.
Billiards - Museum dedicated to Rado Tomov (at birth, Petar II Petrović Njegoš was named Rade Tomov Petrović), his residence was built in 1838, according to the guidelines of Jakov Ozereckovski. It was named after the first billiards, brought from Vienna, which was personally taken care of by the Great Poet. The bishop's personal belongings, books, manuscripts, money, weapons, money are in the permanent exhibition. It is interesting that Billiards was home to Prince Danilo and Princess Darinka, who gave the space a European style, while Prince Nikola also lived with his family in Billiards, until the court was built.
Government House - Historical and Art Museum of Montenegro, is located in this building. There is a unique Christian relic in the Art Pavilion. In the Blue Room – Lady of Philermos, whose journey to Cetinje began centuries ago from Malta, and in the midst of the Second World War, after an unbelievable journey, she arrives in Montenegro.
Cetinje Monastery: In this monastery there are two Christian relics: the hand of St. John the Baptist and the particles of the Holy Cross. The relics of the ruler and Montenegrin educator, Petar The First Petrović Njegoš, rest in the monastery, and "Oktoih", printed in 1494, is kept in this area.
Njegoš's mausoleum: At the request of Bishop Rade, his eternal resting place, built during his lifetime, was built on Jezero peak itself. His vow was fulfilled by the heir, Prince Danilo, who brought out the remains which were then stored in the chapel. The chapel resisted lightning and storms, but not the Austrians, who razed it to the ground during the First World War. In the period between the two world conflicts, a new one was built, and the current look was given in 1974, according to the idea of Ivan Meštrović. It is necessary to cross 461 steps, after which you will be greeted by stamens, Montenegrin caryatids, and then the Philosopher, Poet and Bishop, in a caring position and in deep thoughts.
