When the large chamomile flowers bloom in the spring, the whole area of the northeastern part and the shores of the River Lim and Lešnica look like a huge White Field (Bijelo Polje). That is why this Montenegrin city bears that unusual and completely fitting name.

After the departure of the Illyrians and Romans, this part was ruled by the Ottoman Empire. And since the Middle Ages, they have named today's Bijelo Polje "Akovo", which means "town".
