Leaving antiquity behind, Berane was an important center of the Raška region in the Middle Ages - it was called Budimlja. And during the 18th century, according to some legends, it got its present name from the place Beranselo, from where it spread as today's city center. Other opinions are that the Turkish word Bir-hane (one house) was crucial. It also changed its centuries-old name in the 20th century, named after the national hero, Ivan Milutinović - Ivangrad. But in the 1990s, like Podgorica after Titograd, it returned to its previous name.
