A city of undiscovered natural treasures, intersection of Eastern and Western cultures
Located at the foot of Mount Orjen, Herceg Novi is a city with a very rich history and one of the youngest cities in this part of the Adriatic coast. It used to be part of the Venetian province of Albania Veneta and was called Castelnuovo (ital. New fortification). It was founded and built by the Bosnian king Tvrtko I in 1382. Thanks to numerous cultural and civilizational influences during the developmental periods, the city possesses an extraordinary variety of architectural styles. The incredible combination of the sea and mountains evokes admiration and creates a special sense of excitement during your stay in this magically appealing corner of Boka. The natural beauties and geographical location of Herceg Novi make it one of the most beautiful and most visited cities on the Montenegrin coast.
Herceg Novi has two main squares. Belavista Square (ital. Nice view ) is located in the Old Town and can easily be reached by the stairs past the main square of Nikola Đurković through the Sahat Tower. Orthodox Church of St. Michael the Archangel, unique for its stone iconostasis, dominates the Bellavista Square. This Old Town Square houses the City Archives, The Library, Art Gallery, Cafeterias, as well as private buildings. The Catholic churches of St. Jerome and St. Leopold Mandić represent two large sacral buildings by which Herceg Novi is recognizable.
Herceg Novi is a city of ramparts and fortifications. The Sahat tower, the fortress of Forte Mare, the Citadel, the Kanli Kula are the silent guardians of the traditions of this city that testify to the cultures and civilizations that have shaped it throughout history. Long narrow streets of stairs and stone palaces with green shutters give Herceg Novi the characteristic charm of a rustic, sleepy seaside town.
The town promenade Pet Danica, 7 km long, connects Herceg Novi and Igalo. This unusual promenade was built on the site of the former railway line and was named after the five heroines of World War II.
For centuries, seafarers brought seeds of unusual plants, exotic trees and fruits from distant journeys, and in time Herceg Novi became a kind of an open botanical garden. Thus, different types of exotic vegetation sprout along the promenade, such as various types of palm and cactus, banana, magnolia, mimosa, wild orange, camellia, oleander, pittosporum, eucalyptus, etc.
For fans of Mediterranean events, every year in February there is the Mimosa Feast, a traditional festivity celebrating mimosa, the first spring flower. Herceg Novi is a quiet city, with many historical sights and cultural events. In the local bars and restaurants, you can enjoy the local cuisine and if you want to experience the nightlife, Herceg Novi will provide you with a variety of facilities.
